A member at the Bannatyne Health Club in Tamworth is going to great lengths to raise money to fund vital research and support for those living with diabetes.
Lynsey, 40, from Tamworth, is using the health club’s pool to swim 44 miles – the equivalent of swimming the Channel and back – to raise money for the charity Diabetes UK.
The challenge, named Swim22, was inspired by the 163 Diabetes UK supporters who have already swum the actual English Channel – from Dover to Calais. While the initial challenge was to swim 22 miles, Lynsey, who is an avid swimmer, decided to up the ante and swim Dover to Calais and back.
Lynsey said: “Everyone at Bannatyne’s in Tamworth has been very supportive of my fundraising. Not only have staff and members from the club been making donations, but also leaving lovely messages on my donation portal. It’s been really encouraging and helped keep me motivated.
“Despite living with diabetes for more than 29 years, I have only recently been lucky enough to benefit from technological advances, including insulin pumps and automated glucose monitoring.
“I know myself that living with diabetes is a constant battle. Unfortunately, not everyone has the same access to the life-changing equipment that I do. There is much, much more that needs to be done to improve the quality of people with diabetes in the UK.”
Mark Reynolds, general manager at Bannatyne Health Club & Spa Tamworth, said: “We always like to support our members charitable endeavours. The team at the club has been keeping track of Lynsey’s progress through the fundraising portal, and it’s been fantastic to see the miles adding up over the last few weeks. She has posted some great times and it’s been remarkable to see her performance and fitness improve.”
