Bannatyne Fitness, the UK’s largest independent health club operator.

Bannatyne Fitness is the UK’s largest independent health club operator, with 61 clubs across England Scotland and Wales.

The Bannatyne’s Health Clubs chain began 11 years ago with the first club on Teesside. The idea was born following a skiing accident after which Company Chairman Duncan Bannatyne needed regular exercise to recover. He could not find facilities locally and decided to use some of the proceeds from the sale of his previous business, Quality Care Homes plc, to establish the fitness chain.

Bannatyne’s Health Clubs can now be found in towns and cities throughout the UK, with a particularly strong presence near residential areas of large towns.

The company is also the largest health club operator in Scotland with 12 clubs across the country, from Aberdeen in the North to Dumfries in the South.

The formula has always been to offer a value for money membership-based service, which places stronger emphasis on fitness, exercise and the healthy lifestyles of its members rather than pampering and exclusivity.

Bannatyne’s provides its members a wide range of exercise and wellbeing opportunities to support their healthy lifestyles. Fully equipped gymnasiums, featuring the latest in cardiovascular and resistance training equipment, are supplemented by multiple fitness studios offering, on average, more than 60 group exercise classes a week.

The clubs also feature relaxing and stylish ‘wet areas’, which include deck level swimming pools, large spa baths and sauna and steam rooms. The majority of the clubs provide free car parking for members and all of the health clubs are fully-air conditioned and incorporate high quality male, female and family changing areas.

Bannatyne’s Health Clubs also combine health and fitness expertise to offer members increased support to their healthy lifestyles with specially-designed weight management programmes.

Devised to offer Bannatyne members with expert nutritional advice and support from the club’s professionals, the programmes guide rather than preach about the importance healthy eating tailored to the individual requirements of each member.

To support Bannatyne’s nutritional advice the company has designed the menu in its health clubs’ café/bars to fit in with the programme so members can not only enjoy a range of tasty and healthy dishes at the clubs, but also see how they are broken down into the relevant food groups and contents.

Incorporated within 27 of Bannatyne’s Health Clubs is The Sensory Spa. Providing a range of relaxing and invigorating treatments for men and women, The Sensory supports Bannatyne’s holistic approach to health and exercise.

Also offering a selection of spa packages, including the Sensory Experience and the Stress Cure, The Sensory also provides a contemporary hairdressing service staffed by fully-trained and experienced stylists.

In addition to the Bannatyne’s Health Clubs chain, Duncan Bannatyne owns and operates a number of successful businesses.

Bannatyne Hotels Ltd operates Hotel Bannatyne incorporating Maxine’s Restaurant in Darlington and Hotel Bannatyne in Durham. A third Hotel Bannatyne is planned for Norwich later in 2007.

In Newcastle, Bannatyne also owns Bar Bannatyne, a stylish and contemporary venue within the impressive leisure complex, The Gate.

The most recent addition to Bannatyne’s business portfolio is Bannatyne Housing Ltd, which has recently started construction on its first prestigious housing development in Dumfries, Scotland. The company has also earmarked other site across the UK for further developments.
